We just returned to the Outer Banks and decided we wanted a pizza.  Ms T had read that Max's has moved south into KDH which is very convenient for us.  They are in a location that we have frequented as two other restaurants, Café Franco (which we really liked) and Crazy Iguana which was OK.  We have issues with the pizzas in this area but have found Max's to be as good as any and better than most.

We are not into fru-fru pizzas and just like good bulk Italian sausage and either green or Kalamata olives.  We look for thick rubbery mozzarella cheese (try Amato's in Chicagoland for the best example we know).  This time we had Kalamatas because I wanted them.  The pizza is consistent with the old location.  We may be back with some friends in a week or so.  I have two comments.  I did not remember the sauce being as sweet as it is, and I wish the sausage was bulk style with more fennel.  Regardless, this will remain our pizza place unless we decide to try OBX Pizza now that they have moved into Kitty Hawk.  This is especially true now that they are so close to where we stay.

This is a strong three stars.  With better sausage and less sweet sauce, I would easily go four.  It's just a matter of personal taste.

So it wasn't great. And it wasn't bad. It was perfectly average. I got a grilled chicken and fresh mozzarella pizza. The sauce was okay. A little thin which made the toppings slide off as if it were a warning to not eat the pizza and find something else. The mozzarella was actually pretty good and the most redeeming part of the meal. Now the chicken... I do not exaggerate in saying that it might have been Tyson's frozen grilled chicken. It had no flavor, mediocre texture, and was still conservatively placed on the pizza. My parents who also ate pizza had similar complaints. Maybe I got unlucky with my choice. But I would be wary of what you get.

Service however was perfect and the woman we had was friendly and kept checking to make sure we were good. The price was a little much for the quality of food that we received.

As always, Max's pizza and family-style Italian dishes are the best. Max's recently moved its location to a nicer, larger facility right beside the Kill Devil Hills water tower. The location is changed, but the food is just as good!

The outer banks doesn't have a lot of cuisine I respect but man can they make a pizza! This half pepperoni half fully loaded barbecue pizza was the best I've ever had! Ordered with a side of fries that left a bit to be desired but the pizza was so great it just didn't matter. Treat yourself to a good time after your swim and stop by.
